Pro-tip: avoid a leaky coffee cup
Jon, you should tell your friend Liz that you are not the only person who does this. I consider this a pro-tip, actually. Cups and lids aren’t always perfect and all too often the heat of the coffee (and therefore condensation built up by the trapped steam) can cause the lip to swell and warp; the seam area always seems to be the weakest point.
In my experience this seems to be especially true with Americanos, teas, and black coffee. I assume this is because lattes/cappuccinos are both thicker and cooler in temperature.
I’ve been doing it wrong.
Whenever we go out for coffee, Liz always makes fun of me whenever I undo the lid and reposition it. I take great pain to put the opening on the other side of the seam, as I’ve spilled a lot of coffee on myself in the past whenever the seam lines up with the hole.
