If creatives were running things, we would try to create a situation in which everybody got to see everything they wanted to see. And that is the landscape that is emerging, and it’s a less profitable one for the previous generation’s conglomerates, and it is those companies that prefer you to think your selection of one show over defines you as a person and is a matter of life and death. The truth is, people that make you want to laugh are on your side, and people that want to make money off you laughing kind of aren’t, but they own everything and they get us connected to you.
It’s the tenth anniversary of the Patriot Act. But what do you get for the government that knows everything?
I think a good example is the space industry and there’s a lot more that we could look at (reporter asks: Like what besides space?) I’ll leave it at space now (reporter asks: Really? That’s the only place you can see?) I’m just leaving it as space for right now…I don’t want to give a flip off-the-cuff answer.

One thing to remember about the world and all its spinning… it does not, in all actuality, spin straight.
I think I exude a bacon-y sort of aura.
The speed of communications is wondrous to behold. It is also true that speed can multiply the distribution of information that we know to be untrue.

Hip to Be Square by Huey Lewis and the News

Do you like Huey Lewis and The News? Their early work was a little too new wave for my tastes, but when Sports came out in ‘83, I think they really came into their own, commercially and artistically. The whole album has a clear, crisp sound, and a new sheen of consummate professionalism that really gives the songs a big boost. He’s been compared to Elvis Costello, but I think Huey has a far much more bitter, cynical sense of humor. In ‘87, Huey released this, Fore, their most accomplished album. I think their undisputed masterpiece is “Hip to be Square”, a song so catchy, most people probably don’t listen to the lyrics. But they should, because it’s not just about the pleasures of conformity, and the importance of trends, it’s also a personal statement about the band itself.

Nothing is original. Steal from anywhere that resonates with inspiration or fuels your imagination. Devour old films, new films, music, books, paintings, photographs, poems, dreams, random conversations, architecture, bridges, street signs, trees, clouds, bodies of water, light and shadows. Select only things to steal from that speak directly to your soul. If you do this, your work (and theft) will be authentic. Authenticity is invaluable; originality is non-existent. And don’t bother concealing your thievery - celebrate it if you feel like it. In any case, always remember what Jean-Luc Godard said: “It’s not where you take things from - it’s where you take them to.”
